What: The Queen Anne Cub Scouts 2009 Pinewood Derby! Are you ready? It’s time to put those finishing touches on your Pinewood Derby cars! The Pack’s new race track is ready to run ‘em fast. Where: Bethany Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall ((1818 Queen Anne Ave N.).
Car check-in: Friday, March 6th from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. All cars that want to be included in the “Best in Show” competition must be checked in on Friday evening and “impounded” for the night. We'll have tools and lead weights available onsite for adjusting your car weight (to maximize the 5 oz maximum weight target). Race Day: Opening ceremony begins Saturday, March 7th at 10:00 A.M. Racing will begin immediately after the opening ceremony. This will be the last opportunity to check in cars. Please note: there will not be tools or lead weights available onsite race-day morning. A Deli / Bake Sale (see details below of what is needed from each scout), a Support our Troops effort, and a craft area (pending volunteer support) will be open throughout the event for sustenance and alternate areas of “focus” as needed.
What to Bring: You (in uniform), your friends and family (don’t forget to give out your pit passes to boys you think might enjoy scouting), an item to donate to the Derby Deli (see below for specific details based on den) and items to Support our Troops (optional, see below), a camera and your scouting energy.
The Pinewood Derby is one of the marquee events of the scouting year and is a special opportunity to strengthen the unity of the Pack. Therefore, we do ask that you and your scout make every effort to attend the entire event. Cheering on the other scouts and being sure you are there when your car is on the track are both important. We will not be publishing a racing schedule in advance as we move through the races den-by-den in a free-form fashion. The run-off of the fastest cars from each den will occur at the end of all den races. The fastest car in each den will receive medals and gain eligibility to the District Derby. You will not want to miss any of the excitement all the way through to the presentation of awards. We will have an onsite Derby Deli & Bake Sale so you do not even have to leave the event to grab a bite to eat! And, please, leave all hand-held electronic game machines at home.
Derby Deli & Bake Sale Information Hot Dogs and Nachos will be available for purchase while at the Derby. Also, each scout is responsible for bringing an item to the bake/deli sale on Saturday morning based on their respective den (please do not bring food donated items to the Friday night car check-in). For the sake of simplicity, we are limiting food items to finger food and pre-packed snacks and drinks. All proceeds from the deli/bake sale go towards offsetting the cost of this event. Diane Yuen is coordinating the bake/deli sale. Please contact Diane directly at diane@togawa-insurance.com or 206 940-0303 if you have any questions or would like to volunteer.
Dragon (Second Year Webelos): Bake sale items (home made cookies, brownies, muffins, etc.) First Year Webelos: Bake sale items (home made cookies, brownies, muffins, etc.) Bears: Drinks (suggestions: Individual drink boxes and water) Wolves: Individualized snack packs (gold fish crackers, granola bars, fruit, etc.) Tigers: Drinks (suggestions: individual drink boxes and water)
Volunteer Opportunities We are still in need of volunteers to help with: -- setting up the facility starting around 1:30 P.M. on Friday afternoon (should require no more than a couple of hours) -- car adjustments on Friday night -- judges to hang around a little after 8:00 P.M. -- help during the event -- tear down afterwards Please refer to our earlier email with the volunteer details! If you can help in any area, please let us know.
Support Our Troops Your Cub Master, Mr. E., has asked scouts to consider bringing items to Derby Day that we can collect and later package for delivery to our troops stationed overseas. Smallish things like: -- Recent Magazines (new or used) -- Paperback books (new or used) -- Small stuffed animals (new or lightly used) -- Letters from the scouts (the more the better) -- Pictures and simple stories of life here at home -- Candy (not used J) -- Beef jerky and other suitable, small, high "feel good" items
In addition we hope to have a "thank you" station at the Derby where scouts can draw pictures and write more letters. We will schedule a Pack activity to box up what we collect/make and send them out.
