Pinewood Derby Cars will be distributed tonight, January 12th, at our Pack Meeting. For those scouts unable to attend the Pack meeting, the kits will be provided to your Den Leader. Attached is a Pinewood Derby Car Design Sheet. The blank “blocks” on this sheet are the actual size (side profile) of the wood blocks that are contained in the Derby car kit. You can use this sheet to layout car designs which can then be cut-out and used for transferring to the block of wood. A word of advice, if you are designing for speed, it is best not to fabricate cars that come to too much of a point in front as the order of finish is determined by light sensors. Given that the cars move side-to-side in lane guides, cars that have a sharp point may not trigger the sensor right away. Try to keep the width of the front of the car to at least ¾” or so. Attached are the rules which are also posted on our Forms & Information page. Next Monday evening, January 19, we will be gathering in the Fellowship Hall at the Queen Anne United Methodist Church where we will have scroll saws available for the boys to cut-out the main shapes of their Pinewood Derby cars. Boys should come prepared with their designs in-hand for cut-out. To hopefully move things along, we will use the following schedule. However, if you are unable to attend your den’s time slot, feel free to come at any time that is the most convenient for you. (Given the size of our Pack and the potential for sawdust clean-up overload, we will only going to be cutting out the cars and leaving the finishing work for home and/or den meetings.)
Cars for any interested adults and/or siblings, will be available both at the January 12th Pack meeting and at next week’s cut-out event. Cost is $4.00 per car and due upon receipt (the cost for each Scout car is included in their annual dues). Please contact 1st Year Webelos parent, John Burreson (Burreson.Family@gmail.com) if you want a car and are not able to be at either of these venues. If you have any questions, or if you can assist on Monday, January 19th, please contact Jim Grane at 206/282-6861 or granefamily@comcast.net . The Pinewood Derby event will be Saturday, March 7, with the official check-in of cars Friday evening, March 6. Design awards will be given to all cars, with medals to the top three designs and a traveling trophy to the top design. Similarly, awards will be given to the top speed finishers in the dens and the Pack, with a traveling trophy to the fastest car. More information to follow in the coming weeks! |
