Soapbox Derby committee formation

posted Apr 12, 2010, 12:39 PM by Webmaster Queen Anne Cub Scouts

We are looking to form an official Soapbox Derby 2010 committee.  The direction of the committee would be to:

1)    Explore ways to increase the experience for the Scouts, and,

2)    Manage the Pack’s summer marquee Soapbox Derby event.

As part of augmenting the experience for the boys, we are looking at building additional derby cars.  Our Queen Anne Pack committee has agreed to fund at least two new cars in the current format.  However, the Soapbox committee will explore the possibility of building two new additional cars that meet the requirements to compete in a nationally sanctioned Soapbox Derby car event.  The idea is that the fastest scouts from our Pack would be able to advance to compete in a local nationally sanctioned Soapbox Derby event (similar to how the Pinewood Derby car winners advance to a district competition).  There is an existing governing body, with local chapters, that can provide the committee with necessary guidance. These pictures are examples of sanctioned Soapbox Derby cars.

Here are some possible areas for the committee to focus on:

·      Car design, safety and construction

·      Competition format

·      Track safety and improvement

·      Event flow

·      Event activities and food

It is recommended that we form the committee by April 20 and begin our planning process before April 30 to increase our likelihood of goals achievement.  Starting early will also give Scouts opportunities to participate in the construction of the cars.

This could be a very exciting project for the Pack.  There are several people that have expressed strong interest in this expanded event and in facilitating the construction of the new derby cars.  Now we need to bring this energy together!

If you have interest in being on the committee or assisting with the event, please contact your Den leader or Bryan Paganelli.  His phone number is 206-300-4440 and his email is bryanpaganelli@qwest.net.
